East Cobb Child care tips: Why the right stimulation is key to early brain development

Posted on 07-24-2014

At birth, your infant’s brain is filled with cells that are only active for a limited period of time. This window is concentrated in the first five years of her life. In order to activate as many brain cells as possible, neural connections have to be developed and cemented through specific, repeated stimulation as each part of the brain develops.

You, as a parent, play a vital role in providing this stimulation, as does does anyone else who has extended contact with your child, including your child care facility. This makes it very important that any facility you choose shares your vision and offers your child targeted stimulation that emphasizes language, cognitive, socio-emotional and physical development.

Brain boosting activities for your child

Here are some great activities that you can enjoy with your child, giving her plenty of stimulation:

  • Singing: Whether you want to get your infant smiling, clapping or to settle down for the night, singing is an ideal way to do it. Your child will recognize your voice and respond to it, and this teaches her about communication, music and rhythm while developing a loving bond. Singing also helps your infant learn about the role of language and, as she gets older, creates a fun way to learn different words.
  • Baby talk: Research has found that classic baby talk with high pitches and exaggerated vowels is one of the best sources of stimulation for your child. It helps a child develop the ability to focus, to learn language skills and aids in socio-emotional development. You can even just talk to your infant about whatever it is that you are currently doing, whether you are dressing your infant or getting ready for a feeding. The subject is not as important as the talking!
  • Exploring the outdoors: Whatever your infant’s age, she will find the outdoors to be a fascinating place full of new sights, sounds, textures and experiences. All of these provide plenty of stimulation, especially when a parent or caregiver is there to provide safe, loving guidance. Your infant will learn to follow things with her eyes, grasp new objects, discover how grass feels, and even meet other infants on a similar journey. A picnic at Laurel Park will give your child plenty to see and a safe place to explore. From watching an older child at the playground to feeding the ducks and taking the stroller around the paved track, your infant will love every minute.
